In May, much of the formal wear industry was still primarily in prom season, but as the month progressed the industry as a whole shifted focus from prom tuxedo rentals to wedding tuxedo rentals.  If you compare May with April’s top ten list, it’s easy to see this shift reflected in the results.

Another large contributor to the significant shift from April to May is the heat.  Most of the country is transitioning from a mild and pleasant spring to a much hotter summer.  Needless to say, that impacts what tuxedos are renting the best.

For several of the past months, the top renters have been classic black tuxedos and those that conform to Black Tie standards.  That’s mainly because black tuxedos are the only formal choice for many venues and they also look best at night.  Because black tie galas and proms both take place at night,  black has been the most popular, up until May.

In May we see that the classic black options have been relegated to the lower 5 of the top 10 and grey tuxedos and suits along with tan destination suits have filled in all of the gaps, making grey and tan the clear color family preferences for May.  When you think about it, it makes sense.

Both the Tan ‘Rapture’ Suit by Jean Yves and the Sand ‘Riviera’ Destination Suit by After Six were made specifically to cater to destination weddings, which are prevalent this time of year.  They are lighter options for weddings in both hue, weight, and formality and correspond with the surrounding sand tones of a destination backdrop.  Because they are lighter they are also cooler, and that is a huge consideration for outdoor functions in the summer heat.

Likewise, grey tuxedos and suits are also lighter and cooler options than classic black.  Also, grey formal options like the Steel Grey ‘Twilight’ Tuxedo by Jean Yves are perfect for proms, daytime weddings, and destination weddings.  Between its perfectly poised crossed venue position and the fact that it’s an undeniably cool style, it’s no wonder that the Steel Grey ‘Twilight’ Tuxedo has earned the top spot, and the grey color family is the most well represented on the chart.
