The Top Ten Chart for May this year is very telling when it comes to important formal trends.  Just like April is the best indicator of popular prom styles, May offers a unique perspective into another of the most important seasons on the formal wear calendar.  In May prom season is still going strong in many regions, but weddings also start building up momentum.  That means that nationwide there’s a healthy mix of prom tuxedos AND wedding tuxedos being rented.  With that as context, take a look and see what exciting trend bridges the gap!

Grey Tuxedos and Suits positively dominate the Top Ten Chart in May, claiming 8 out of 10 spots.  Grey tuxedos and suits are incredibly popular for both proms and weddings because they are so versatile.  With a wide variety of shades and ways to wear them, Grey formal wear has become a staple year round. But it isn’t a new trend.  This trend has been building for years, reaching new heights every year.

Tan Tuxedos and Suits represent the remainder of the chart.  While tan suits are also a popular ‘dressed down’ option for prom, they are also incredibly popular this time of year for destination weddings.  The color matches the sandy tones that destination weddings are known for and also look great with the earth tones of a daytime garden wedding.

The last most notable thing about May’s Top Ten Chart is not what is on it but what isn’t.  You’ll notice there aren’t any black tuxedos on the chart at all.  And there’s a very good reason for it.  Classic Black Tuxedos always wain in popularity during the warmer months of the year.  Usually black tuxedos drop off the Top Ten Charts around June or July, but as Grey Tuxedos and Suits continue to become more prevalent and their styling becomes more classic, there’s more incentive to avoid the heat and opt for a grey or a tan ensemble instead.  So it stands to reason that in May, when the weather heats up and most weddings happen during the day, Black Tuxedos become less popular than Grey Tuxedos and Suits.
