Here at MyTuxedoCatalog.com, we like to talk a lot about Black Tie standards and proper formal etiquette. Just so we’re clear, we aren’t doing that today. What we are doing is taking a look at a surprising trend emerging in the world of men’s rental formal wear.
On April 25th, 2013 the reality TV show ‘Duck Dynasty’ broke A&E’s record rating with 9.6 million viewers tuned in to watch the season 3 finale. I mention that to frame the significant influence this show clearly has. The show follows the bearded lives of the Robertson family, founders and owners of the multi-million dollar ‘Duck Commander’ company in West Monroe, LA. The opening credits of the show feature the Robertson father, sons, and uncle, all in tuxedos with camouflage accents. Front and center stands Willie Robertson, the show’s focal character, in a full camouflage tuxedo. 9.6 million viewers later, guess what new formal trend is emerging.
Folks all over the country are increasingly renting camouflage tuxedos for formal/fun events like proms and weddings. While this has been going on for some time now, the trend seems to be increasing with the show’s popularity. Rental formal wear stores all over are reporting customers asking for “the Duck Dynasty tuxedo.” While we don’t offer the exact tuxedo donned by Willie Robertson above (it has completely black lapels) we do have something very similar, and its demand has increased significantly.
The ‘Alpine’ Tuxedo by Bright Colored Tuxedos (heretofore known as BCT) is made from the actual Mossy Oak Break-up pattern that hunters typically wear. It features a notch lapel, two button front, and black satin trim around the lapel, collar, and edges. The tuxedo includes coat, matching trousers, vest, bow tie or long tie, and pocket square.
When I first saw this tuxedo, I assumed it would be more popular in the South. Being from the South myself, I knew first hand how prevalent camouflage is in the Southern culture. But there are hunters everywhere. And where there are hunters, there is also an affinity for camouflage. As our records of rental history indicate, the popularity of the Camouflage ‘Alpine’ Tuxedo by BCT is actually widespread around the whole country.
At the end of the day, the ‘Alpine’ is still a novelty tuxedo. It takes a special kind of person to wear this to a formal function, since it doesn’t actually help you blend in at all unless your wedding or prom is held in a heavily wooded area. Regardless of its growing popularity, you probably won’t see this tuxedo regularly on the Top 10 list. But in terms of trends that started small and got consistently bigger, and trends that we think might have some staying power, this camouflage tuxedo in one of our top picks.
Whether you’re someone who wants to wear a tuxedo that’s sure to be a hit at your next event, or you’re a formal vendor wanting to know which styles are good to promote, clear tuxedo trends like these make it easy. But don’t thank us. Thank them:
